Title: Outdoor Classroom
Size: 19 x 29 in Dpi - 200 Medium: Poster/Photopea Completion: April 17, 2023 EXHIBITION TEXT
The title "Outdoor Classroom" refers to the idea of designing a classroom that would be advantageous to both the teacher and the students. The chairs and classroom layout are the main focal points of this outdoor classroom design. Since chairs are either rough and unsteady or lack the back support that makes kids feel uncomfortable, they are frequently disliked by students at school. The outdoor classroom chairs are made with comfort in mind, so that kids won't experience any physical discomfort while attending class. The classroom's setup is the other important factor. In schools, desks are frequently arranged in a crowded style that makes it difficult for students to get in and out of their seats. The design of this outdoor classroom is a little bit more roomy, giving children more space to walk around and feel comfortable.

I selected these two artists because I adored the chair and couch's interior design. I loved the way the chair was made since it appears to be quite comfortable to sit on and offers back support, both of which would be very helpful to kids because I don't like having to sit in uncomfortable chairs at school. At school, there are some chairs with back supports, but they are hard and can be very uncomfortable to sit on at times. On the other hand, there are some chairs without back supports, which are also very uncomfortable to sit on because there is nothing to support your back. On those chairs, my back would occasionally hurt. Everyone is typically exhausted from getting up early to travel to school, so I want pupils to feel at ease when they get at school. Arne Jacobson really inspired me because of how comfy it appears, and I want to build something similar to that. I want to be able to make a pleasant chair that would benefit the outdoor classroom setup. I was greatly influenced by Roy David's industrial design because of how effectively he utilized space in the creation of his chairs and tables. I really liked how this place was decorated inside, and I want to recreate it. I want to emphasize the space because it is one of the most important elements. I want to make good use of the space, and if I know the size of the classroom, I want to be able to think of what would benefit the outdoor classroom and emphasize what and how a person would feel when they enter it. Roy Design's use of space served as an inspiration for what I want in the classroom and how I could use the space. The delicate, natural lines of the Arne Jacobsen egg chair served as a refuge from the harsh glass and steel, and they were molded in a challenging foam fabric that was similarly cushioned and upholstered. This greatly motivated me because I wasn't sure what materials I would need to make a chair. I would have to think about the materials that would benefit the chair if I wanted to design a soft, comfortable chair. I appreciated how Roy David's minimally mechanical and interesting concept captures the culture of the workplace, which values excellence, ingenuity, and delight. This goes beyond the products of the company and their interactions with customers, and it is truly inspirational because he and his team took the clients' ideas and feelings into consideration and were able to make them come to life. I want to be able to do the same; I want to think about what students and teachers would like and need in an outdoor classroom. For me to be able to create and include it in an outdoor classroom, I want to take into account other people's feelings and ideas. I want an outdoor classroom to have a welcoming, vivacious atmosphere.
Planning
The first part of the planning was considering how big this outdoor classroom had to be. I was thinking of having a gazebo because I was considering the weather. If it were raining the students could be in the gazebo so they won't get wet. I was also considering some sort of greenhouse classroom with heat inside for the wintertime. With these three ideas in mind I was considering what type of interior design I wanted and the materials I would need.
In the second part of planning, I was considering what furniture I would need in an outdoor classroom. I knew I wanted a chair so I considered what materials I would need for that and how I want to design the chair. I then considered the tables and thought about how I wanted to design them and what type of material the table would be. After considering what I need for both the table and chair, I decided what else I would need in the gazebo. I wanted to add a trash can where people can throw away their trash, I want to add a white/chalkboard so the teacher can write and teach on, and wanted to add bean bag chair and plants to make the environment feel livelier.

The last part of planning was how I want the outside part of the gazebo to look because I don't everything to be inside considering this is an outdoor classroom. Outside of the gazebo, I was considering adding more plants or maybe even bushes. I was also considering having the tree surround the bench I want to add. In this sketch, I also added a walkway that will guide you through the gazebo. I will also add some grass and a picnic-type table so people can do their work outside instead of the gazebo the bench I will have next to the picnic table will have back support and I will have some pillows on there to make it comfortable.

Experimentation
For experimentation, we had a professor from MIAD to come work with my class. During his time visiting we had to practice drawinf lines and creating an outline of different outline like table, room, a cup, etc.
Down below are the different things we did during class.
Down below are the different things we did during class.
Process
I compiled all my planning into one document because I will be presenting this idea at MIAD. The things I would need to have for this presentation were my background research such as my inspiration and people's feeling of what they want in an outdoor classroom that would make them feel at ease, the size of the classroom, and the types of materials needed for the outdoor classroom). I will also consider the mind map, the think chart (see, hear, think, and feel), the OPI statement, planning sketches, sketching out the whole classroom with a different perspective, and including an enlarged sketch with items I will specifically be focused on or talk about during my presentation. With all of this information, I started to add it onto a document and then I will put it in photopea to save it as Jpeg. Once I saved it as Jpeg, I will then saved it onto my USB drive so I can print it out so I can present it at MIAD.
These are how the information and picture I had edited on photopea turned out.
What I have on here are my ideas of how I want the outdoor classroom to look like and I mainly wanted to focused on the chair and desk, because In school some of the desk are attached to the chair which is uncomfortable. I wanted the desk and chair to be separated. The chairs and desk I thought of were adjustable and I want it to be adjustable because I want the student in school to feel comfortable and sometime desk and chairs are uncomfortable to work and sit on. |
This is a screenshot of what I had on the document
After completing the first two poster for the first half of the presentation, we were than giving a task to make another poster for the final presentation in MIAD during April 2023. This time the poster is our final idealization and documentation of our outdoor classroom design. In class we were given a template for our poster for the final part of this projects. This template would be later transfer to photopea so the poster can be printed off
Each components of the poster had: - Problem Statement - Objective - Existing Solutions - Inspiration - Ideation - Documentation concept drawing |
Before putting all of my key components and inspiration onto photopea, I first wrote everything I needed in the poster on a separate documentation first as photopea tends to delete information or it would freeze making hard to obtained the information we already had. In the documentation it has every information about the problem statement of an indoor classroom leading to a final solutions and design for an outdoor classroom. The problem about the indoor classroom were about how students often feel caged and worn out and students frequently don't participate in class when the teacher is lecturing because of the environment of an indoor classroom.
Once I was done writing every information's that I needed to be in the poster, I then drew my "ideation and final documentation concept drawing" of an outdoor classroom. My ideation was to help me finalize how the chairs and the classroom setup design were going to end up looking. I drew about for different design of chairs to help out with how I want the final design of the chair to look. It took me a while with what I want the chair to look like, but in the end I chose the fourth design of the chair as it seems to be more comfortable and it also benefits the students. For the chair I want it to have a back support, but also an armrest as a lot classroom don't have this type of stuff. The type of texture on the chair I wanted was leather since it’s for an outdoor classroom and it’s best for any type of weather. For the design aspect I want it to be more spacious as classroom tend to feel more clustered because of how the seating are arranged. Having students feel comfortable, more freely and a seat arrangement set up in a pod allows students to engage in the topic discussed in class and get to know each other for an outdoor classroom.
This is my final decision for the components I design for the outdoor classroom
The final project was creating a poster that I will later be presenting about my design at MIAD. For this project I decided to name it "the outdoor classroom" as it serves a purpose of the design I made for the outdoor classroom. I designed a chair that would make students feel more comfortable and at ease and classroom setup that has a lot of space for students to move in and out of their seats more comfortably. I decided that I didn't want students to have to sit in a chair that is attached to a desk as it is uncomfortable to sit on and because you can't move comfortably.

REFLECTION
The final project turned out extremely well and decently. It was a lot of fun to create a part of an outdoor classroom. I was pleased with the way the chair I designed turned out. The chair's design, in my opinion, was pretty nice. I was successful in creating a chair that would be cozy for students to sit in. I asked my siblings if they thought it looked nice and comfy to sit in, and they said yes, which made me feel pleased. I believe I could have constructed the outdoor classroom arrangement a little bit better, but overall it looked fairly good. Although it is drawn on paper, I felt the design looked like a very roomy for an outdoor classroom. I received a lot of guidance with the process of designing the outdoor classroom during my first presentation at MIAD. I was able to separate the essential components of the outdoor classroom that I wanted to emphasize more. I'm pleased with the outcome, and working on this project has helped me become a better designer and artist overall.
